Cadet Sailing Information
Cadet Sailing at Hamble River Sailing Club is open to all members, and also to non-members to see if they like sailing – and us!
So let’s see what is planned for the 2018 season!
We will continue with our Cadet Sessions, focusing on ‘time on the water’ and fun. These sessions have proved to be great introductions for younger members to get on the water and for the more experienced to have fun with their friends. It’s also a great opportunity for new members to join in with these sessions, and those who have recently completed RYA courses at the school and want to develop their sailing experience and opportunities on the water.
This year we have incorporated many more events into our Cadet programme, some events are free to members, whilst others will incur a small charge to cover the cost of Instructors – Instructor led courses will require minimum numbers to allow the session to run.
Non-Members can attend two sessions, after which they must become a member of HRSC to take part in further activities. All of our cadet sessions are run and organised by the parents of HRSC Cadet/Peanut members. Parents are required to attend these events, children cannot be left without parent or guardian supervision.
If you would like to register your child for one of the Cadet/Peanut Sessions please email Richard Foulkes. we require the following information:Name of child/children attending Age and ability of attendees Support you can offer (experience and/or any vessel)
Peanuts/Cadets emails are sent out on a Sunday evening, before the following Saturday session – your responses greatly assists in our planning of the sessions, so that we know who is coming, what age group they are in, what ability, and what you as an adult can offer in support. Our aim is to run sessions that are fun and safe – and having this information means we can plan the sessions to ensure that every child is allocated to a suitable vessel, with adequate safety boat cover and also that you as supporting adults are utilised to the best level.
The club has great resources which we take full advantage of – As the Cadet/Peanuts sessions have become very poplar it would be great if you have a vessel we could use during the sessions, be it a sailing dinghy, rib, canoe, paddle board, or something else.
Training – On Board
Last year HRSC started “On Board” sessions on alternative Tuesday evenings which proved to be very successful, so this year we will be running “On-Board” sessions every Tuesday from May – September between 6-8pm at £10 per session you can book online.
The HRSC Onboard Club is for young sailors, aged 6-18. The aim of the club is to provide a chance to spend more time on the water, and in so doing improve sailing confidence and competence.
The sessions are split in to two groups;
1) For those that have already completed their RYA stage 1&2 course
2) For those that have completed their RYA stage 3 or 4 course
The sessions are not run as formal training, but we will provide on the water coaching and full safety cover from one of our RYA trained Instructors to those that would like it to help them improve at their rate.
in addition to the ‘on Board’ sessions there will be regular racing for cadets and adults on these same Tuesday evenings. This will take the form of a one hour handicap race, so all boats and all ages are welcome– however these Tuesday evening sessions will be self-managed in terms of race officer and safety boats, volunteers will be required.
Race Training & Sailing Coaching
Many of our members have asked for further race training and Sailing Coaching. This year we have put together a Race Training and a Sailing Coaching calendar, the race training sessions will take place on alternative Saturdays to our Cadet sessions, these sessions will be in the afternoons.
Race Training and Sunday Coaching sessions are available to cadet members only and will be building on the cadet’s current knowledge (minimum capability for race training is RYA Level 2 and above – must be able to get round a triangular course). Boats used will be Opppies or Picos – you can either bring your own vessel or borrow one from the club.
These sessions will be run by a team of instructors and will cost £15 per session. Members will need to book via the Club Website, the cut off date for booking is the Monday before the course commences you can book online.
Race training will carry on into the 2018 winter season but will take place on Sunday mornings, please see the cadet Programme below for all dates.
NB. Each session can be booked individually, you can book as few or as many sessions to suit you. Each session will require a minimum of 7 participants to ensure the sessions can take place. Spaces are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment.
Racing with Foxers
Last year, with the kind assistance of Catrina Southworth and the Foxers, HRSC introduced monthly racing with the Foxers and this proved to be very popular. This will continue in 2018 with Sunday dates as per the below schedule.
This will be an open fleet available to any boat with an able cadet(s) or child and parent team. The format is four or five short races, one lappers/two lappers, back to back. Parents – We will need volunteers to help run safety boats so please be ready to step forward.
Annual Camp at Fairthorne
Once again we will be having our Youth Sailing Camp at Fairthorne. This will take place from Thursday 31st May to Sunday 3rd June. This is four days of fun on the water (tides are perfect this year!!!), fun on land and overnight camping! We are awaiting confirmation but anticipate the cost to be £40 per family per night per pitch. If you wish to come along for the day, then the cost will be £15 per child per day. To book, please email Richard Foulkes, with your choice of dates and camping/non-camping and names of all attending. Fairthorne’s booking procedures require that all bookings and full payment must be 6 weeks prior to our camp. Therefore, in order to comply, the closing date for bookings is Monday 16 April. Please make sure you have made your booking and full payment before this date.
Picnic – 14 July
Once again we will have our annual picnic at Badnam Creek. All are invited and it’s a fun day out- remember to bring a picnic
The club runs a Fun Week for Youth sailors – please take a look at the club website for more details or call Julian in the office.
There are local Regattas (Netley, Weston, Warsash, etc) which we are planning to attend – dates and times will be publicised closer to the time. Likewise, we will also host our own Youth Regatta at HRSC.
Our annual Uncle Bobs event (which includes Cousin Bob and Baby Bobs) will be held on Saturday, 8 September. This is open to all Club members.
This year we require more parents to take a more active role in supporting our Youth Sessions.
To help parents, we will be looking to run Assistant Instructor (AI) courses, which will enable them to gain useful skills in teaching and running small sessions. We would hope to run this over a couple of evenings and Saturday mornings (20 hours in total). This is an area which will allow our sessions to run more effectively and share the responsibility of running small groups.
We are also looking to run a Race Level 2 Coaching Course (which would run over a weekend – Saturday and Sunday).
If you are interested in either of these, please contact either Julian Pearson (Club CI) or Richard Foulkes.
There will also be opportunities for parents to have training on running the bar and helping in the kitchen – again, please let us know if you are interested in adding these to your skill set!!
Rachel and Richard always appreciate the support and assistance from parents when running the sessions and covering during holiday and absences! If you are interested in being session Team Leaders for any of the following:
White – beginners (Peanuts)
Red – RYA Level 1 / 2 (Junior Cadets)
Yellow- RYA Level 3 / 4 (Cadets)
Blue – RYA advanced (Senor Cadets)
Please Let Richard know Richard Foulkes.
