Hamble River Sailing Club Junior Warming Pan 2019

The first Junior event of Hamble's centenary year started on Saturday 23rd March with the Junior Warming Pan, which saw 16 boats and 18 sailors out on the water, from Hamble, Warsash, The Royal Southern and Weston sailing clubs. Competitors, their parents and volunteers turned up Saturday morning for the pre-race briefing given by PRO Mike Foster.

With racing being held in front of the club known as "the lagoon" by the cadets, it gave the on looking parents a great viewing point from the club deck. With the windward and leeward mark laid and boats from both the Hamble beach and Warsash making their way to the course the first race was soon underway for the PY class followed by the Optimist class start. With some competitive racing underway the PY class consisting of a Mirror, Feva, Pico and Tera's where doing 4 laps of the race course and the Optimists where doing 3 laps. Race 1 of the PY fleet was won by Freddie Callaghan and Thomas Roy (Royal Southern) in their Mirror with Thomas Saunders (Warsash) wining the first race in the Optimist class.

With the windward mark having been moved to create a bigger course as the tide filled in, race 2 was soon starting with the number of laps being increased for both the PY and Optimist class. With a sudden gust leaving a few boats heeling over and a capsize from Evie Cumming (Warsash), all Sailors were sailing strong to the best their ability. Race 2 saw Freddie Callaghan and Thomas Roy (Royal Southern) winning the PY and Emily Brushett (Royal Southern) winning in the Optimist class.

It was decided to have just three of the four races planned. With a great race start for both classes, the wind dropped creating a few slow laps for all requiring some careful decisions to be made, but it soon picked up again for the final lap of the course allowing both classes to have competitive finishes. With some amazing racing from Sam Peattie and Joe Rowland (Hamble) in the Feva finishing first on the water 5 minutes before the rest of the fleet, it was yet again Freddie Callaghan and Thomas Roy (Royal Southern) winning the third race in the PY class, and Thomas Saunders (Warsash) winning the third Optimist race.

Back in the clubhouse pizza and chips where being had by all, and prize giving soon began with prizes being presented by Nicky Gardner on behalf of River Hamble Combined clubs.

The PY Fleet was won by Freddie Callaghan and Thomas Roy (Royal Southern) in the Mirror with Ella Harris (Weston) placing second in the PY class and First tera. Oliver Ryan (Hamble) placing third in the PY and First Pico.

The Optimist class was won by Thomas Saunders (Warsash), with Emily Brushett (Royal Southern) placing second and Ffion Cerrato (Warsash) placing third.

After a close set of results Warsash sailing club won the Best club on the River Junior Warming Pan Trophy (sponsored by River Hamble Combined Clubs). A big well done to all sailors for an amazing and competitive day of racing, and we hope to see you all back next year for hopefully an annual junior event.
